My most favorite holiday memory…
My most memorable Holiday memory would be with out a doubt my first Thanksgiving with my husband. I decided I wanted to roast a turkey for just him and I and not go anywhere.
James had just recently returned from Afghanistan so we wanted a quiet and intimate Thanksgiving together. Now, I wasn’t a great cook back then. I’m surprised he married me haha, I couldn’t even fry a chicken cutlet! I’ve even bombed making pot roast, yes I know.
How is that possible? That’s a story for another day…
Back to My Favorite Holiday Memory
Well anyway, back to my Thanksgiving 2012 dinner with my husband. We went and bought a frozen turkey from the commissary (grocery store on base) and I left it in the freezer, didn’t think twice about it.
Made garlic mashed potatoes, gravy, you know the basic sides for Thanksgiving. My husband asks me if I had the turkey ready, oh crap. I didn’t know that I needed to put it in the fridge a few days prior to cooking.
Now all I can do is attempt to defrost it in the sink with running water–yikes. I was so embarrassed! We ended up not eating lunch until 6 pm that evening. Yes, I typed that correctly, lunch.
We had every intention of eating a late lunch or early dinner however you want to look at it. But, that just didn’t happen with my major cooking faux pas.
We go to cut into the turkey…
And, you remember the movie Christmas Vacation? My turkey was dry. Well, maybe not THAT dry but dry. My poor husband. I felt terrible making him wait and even more terrible that it wasn’t moist.
I know what you’re thinking… how is this your most memorable holiday memory? It was memorable to me for two reasons:
- It was a quiet and intimate holiday with my husband after not seeing him for seven months. This was the second deployment we’ve experienced together and we have only been married three years. When you do the math we didn’t have a lot of time together. It was nice to just hang out on the couch, watch holiday movies, and spend time together.
- We ended up getting pregnant with our oldest, JJ, after suffering a miscarriage. Not many know about it but I miscarried prior to becoming pregnant with JJ. He is our rainbow baby. We were so excited sharing the news with our family for Christmas that year! He was the first grand-baby on my side of the family and first grand-son on my husband’s. Needless to say, he was spoiled!
I hope you enjoyed reading about my fiasco Thanksgiving dinner! I enjoyed writing and reminiscing about it! What was your most memorable memory?
As always, thanks for reading!
