How to start a mommy blog for beginners, a step-by-step tutorial…

Are you wanting to learn how to start a mommy blog from scratch? You should! It’s one way to make some money in the comfort of your home.

How to Start a Mommy Blog for Beginners

I honestly didn’t think I would be in the world of blogging and I started to blog as an outlet back in June 2018. I didn’t do much research when I started and regrettably used a free platform, Blogger.

I’m about almost two years in with blogging and I honestly love it so much. I’ve started to add my love for other things besides life as a special needs parent.

Now, I’m not trying to dog free platforms but if you’re trying to monetize your blog you’ll need to invest in a host and a domain name. So, I created this tutorial to save you the frustration of having to migrate everything from an existing free platform to a self-hosted site.

Choose Your Mommy Blog Niche

I honestly struggled with picking my niche, and I’m sure you will struggle with it as well.

When I initially started blogging it was about our struggles with our youngest son and special needs parenting. As the year went on I wanted to write about other topics that interested me:

  • Pregnancy
  • Blogging
  • Recipes
  • DIY
  • Travel

I know, choosing a niche is so hard! I decided to go towards more of a lifestyle family niche because I wanted to write more than just our life with special needs parenting. Due to quitting my job to become a caregiver for Jaxson, I wanted to monetize my blog and have a way to have income streaming in.

You can monetize your blog in many ways:

Sponsored Posts: You can apply for sponsored posts through many platforms, i.e. Linqia, Activate Social, and more. There are many sponsored posts for every niche!

Affiliate Products: You can also make money writing about products you and your family love using and recommend through Amazon, Share a Sale, etc.

Advertising: Not good with affiliate marketing? No biggie, you can also advertise on your blog as well. I currently have Google AdSense, and hope to qualify for MediaVine in the near future.

Choose Your Mommy Blog Domain Name

Choosing a domain name can be a fickle one! I went with my domain, Failure to Thrive No More, because I was writing about our journey with Special Needs Parenting and Dyrk1a Syndrome.

Looking back now I wish I picked a more board domain name, something about parenting. Why do you ask? I do write about recipes, DIY, blogging tips (as I’m doing now), and readers might be confused with my domain name choice.

So, when choosing your name try to associate it with your niche. My great friend shares delicious Mediterranean and Latin cuisine and uses it in her domain name.

Examples of mommy blog domain names:

  • Caffeinated Mommy Blog
  • Mommy Needs a Nap
  • Life as a Mombie

You get the idea!

Choose Your Host

When I was finally ready to pick a host, I went with SiteGround. I decided to go with them for a couple reasons. The main reason is their customer service and support, that’s a biggie for me especially when I’m paying for service.

SiteGround has very amazing customer service. I was actually very scared transferring the content I had on Blogger over to WordPress. I would consider myself computer savvy but I didn’t want to risk attempting the migration myself.

They were able to completely migrate everything over for me, set up a basic theme (you have a few to chose from on WordPress), and set up my SSL Certificate in just a few short hours.

I love using their chat service, which is available 24 hours and 7 days a week, for minor questions or concerns. Their staff are quick to answer and if they aren’t the right department, they’ll ensure you are transferred to the right representative.

Don’t like chats? Don’t worry! They have customer service via phone and tickets as well.

Choose Your Mommy Blog Hosting Plan

The second reason, the inexpensive host plans:

How to Start a Mom Blog for Beginners
  • Start Up
    • Features include: 1 website, 10GB web space, 10,000 monthly viewers, free SSL and more.
  • Grow Big
    • Features include: Unlimited websites, 20GB web space, 25,000 monthly viewers, free SSL, free site transfer, and more.
  • Go Geek
    • Features include: Unlimited websites, 30GB web space, 100,000 monthly viewers, free SSL, priority support, and more.

I decided to go with the middle plan, GrowBig, after talking to one of my fellow bloggers. My end game was to have enough blog traffic to qualify for sponsored posts and MediaVine. With GrowBig, you can have up to 20 GB Space and 25,000 monthly views.

Once you get to those amazing blog statistics, you’ll have to upgrade. However you don’t have to worry about that quite yet, baby steps… baby steps! If you’re not sure what route to go, they have amazing chat representatives when you’re trying to decide on the perfect plan!

Setting Up Your Mommy Blog

Once everything is transferred over (if you migrated from a free platform) and ready to go you can get to the fun part: building your blog.

WordPress does have free Themes you can use but I do recommend purchasing a responsive theme for desktop and mobile. Nothing is more frustrating then trying to read an article and it takes 5+ seconds to load.

Your readers will think the same and click out of your post no matter how enticing the title is. My blog theme is from Lovely Confetti and I absolutely love it. When you purchase the theme it does come with the Genesis framework – which means you don’t have to pay for it on top of a theme.

Other places to get amazing themes:

Once you’ve decided on a theme for your blog and customized it, you’ll have to install a few plug-ins!

Plug-ins I recommend:

  • Social Pug
  • Tasty Pins
  • WooCommerce
  • GDPR Cookie Consent
  • Contact 7 Form
  • PinIt Button

You can learn more about my favorite plug-ins here, and why you need Tasty Pins to help boost your rankings. I definitely recommend having a PinIt Button and Social Share buttons! You’ll need them when and if you start sharing them in Facebook Threads.

Facebook share threads help increase your reach along with Pinterest! I’ll go into more detail about the importance of Facebook share threads at a later date.

Lastly, Set Up Google Analytics

I didn’t understand the importance of Google Analytics until I became more serious about blogging. Google Analytics helps you gather information about your blog, what post is trending, what your site speed is, etc.

Knowing which posts are trending is very important. It allows you to understand what your readers love and want from you. You can use this information to create similar content! For example, if your post about pregnancy is doing well you can batch out and create similar posts about the topic: i.e. first trimester must haves, what you should do before having a baby, etc.

Google Analytics can also help you figure out what Pin is doing great on Pinterest and referring the most traffic. I use this information to create a new Pin to keep the traffic coming for the post.

That’s It, You Now Have a Mommy Blog!

That’s it girl! You now have a mom blog! I know it can be very intimidating with so many other mom bloggers out there but you got this. Just focus on creating amazing content related to your niche, perfect Pinterest graphics, and work on your SEO (search engine optimization).
