Simple Ways to Keep With Your New Years Resolutions

The great thing about January is that it is the beginning of the year and you can make a fresh start.

Often times people will find themselves not being able to keep up with New Year’s Resolutions, myself included. People make mistakes of trying to reach too big of a goal – unrealistic goals – and it causes them to fail.

New Year’s Resolutions can be attainable, you just have to know how pick and choose small things you want to change in your life.

#1 Be Realistic with Your New Years Resolutions

Picking a huge New Year’s Resolution can definitely put a damper on your goals. Pick a small goal to ensure that you’re not burning yourself out before the end of the first week of January.

Trying to lose 40 pounds in a month is unrealistic, and so is trying to make thousands of dollars on a new blog. You’ll burn yourself out and want to quit attaining those goals. We don’t want that to happen!

So, take a moment and reflect on what you want to change the most in your life. For example, I would love to lose the 20 pounds I gained this last year. However I know realistically I need to make small changes: eat healthier, work out consistently, etc. I can’t just do everything all at once, I’ll overwhelm myself and burn out!

My strategy to lose the 20 pounds is:

  • Eat out less
  • Get 10,000 steps (I sit a lot for work)
  • Meal prep
  • Yoga for 20 minutes

You get the idea. I’m also not trying to lose everything in a month! I’m making this small changes in my life to become a more healthier me and lose 20 pounds in the process. The key is to make changes slowly and not to overwhelm yourself mama!

#2 Hold Yourself Accountable

Accountability is definitely a must with keeping your New Year’s Resolutions. You want to make sure that you are keeping up with your goals and not reverting back to your old ways. The last thing you want is to lose everything you are working so hard to reach.

There are many ways you can hold yourself accountable:

  • Share your goals
  • Join a program
  • Keep a journal
  • Create micro-goals (to help you reach big goal)
  • Schedule check ins

#3 Set Aside Time for Your New Years Resolutions

In order to reach your goals you need to set aside time, and I stress that a lot in my self-care workbook. You can’t expect everyone to do it for you, you have to set aside time for yourself. You’re the only one who can reach your goals.

I have a planner with all of my boy’s appointments, it allows me to block out time for my work, and for my fitness goals. If you have a busy schedule like me, it is best to plan it out! You can’t reach your goals if you continue to put yourself on the back burner – plan it out!

Some of my favorite planners:

#4 Be Kind to Yourself

Trying to make changes to your current routine can be very difficult, on anyone. If you find yourself eating out a lot, smoking a cigarette, sleeping in, or whatever habit you’re trying to break… be kind to yourself. Making this change takes time, it’s not going to happen overnight.

Reflect back and find why you found yourself reverting back to your old ways. Were you stressed? Was the goal too hard? Reassess your goals and see if you can make more attainable ones, or micro-goals. Don’t beat yourself up, you can do this!

Change takes time!

#5 Celebrate the Little Wins

When you create your goals, or New Year’s Resolutions, come up with mini micro-goals as well. I don’t know about you but crossing off small wins, or micro-goals, makes me feel amazing.

You can do the same for yourself! If you’re trying to lose weight you can create micro-goals like: meal prepping on a weekly basis, eating out less, reaching 10,000 steps, etc. For every one you reach cross it off your list and celebrate with your friends or loved one.

Simple Ways to Celebrate Wins:

  • Share your small win with friends and family
  • Reward yourself with small things like buying an outfit you’ve been eyeing
  • Get a massage
  • Catch up on your favorite TV shows
  • Get a manicure or pedicure

You get the idea! Reward yourself mama, small wins are just as important as the bigger wins.

My Final Thoughts on New Years Resolutions

New Year’s Resolutions can be met. You just need to be mindful when choosing your New Year’s Resolutions. Can’t be a goal too big or you’ll find yourself frustrated and burnt out, trust me I’ve been there. Always remember to celebrate the small wins, they’re just as important when attaining your huge win.

Question for you: What are your goals for the new year? What minor changes are you making to attain these goals?

Save this as a reference for later!
