I’ve started to realize that I’m having more and more difficulties falling asleep. I use to be able to drink a cup of coffee at 9 pm and still have no problem going to sleep.

It has become increasingly difficult to fall asleep as I creep towards my mid-thirty’s. I’m just frequently tired because of my inability to fall asleep! Jaxson use to be a terrible sleeper and wouldn’t sleep through the night.

Now he still needs to sleep next to me but will sleep all night, but now I’m in a pickle! I can’t go to sleep!

With my schedule being jam packed with therapy appointments, client work, house chores, and blog… I NEED sleep. How do you expect to be productive if you don’t get efficient amount of sleep?

Why Sleep is Important

Not having enough sleep can definitely make you a crank pot the morning after. However, there are more concerns of sleep deprivation other than being cranky. Did you know that the CDC recommends that adults get AT LEAST 7 hours a night?

I know, I laughed at that too. I am a mom to two crazy boys and definitely don’t get the appropriate amount of sleep.

Surprising Health Benefits of Sleep

Having a good nights rest will help you in many ways:

  • Mood, you won’t be a crank pot the morning after.
  • No longer forgetful, sleeping better helps boost your brain.
  • Lowers your cholesterol.
  • More sleep will help with athletics, and keep you motivated.
  • Can help with hunger, sleep will make you feel less hungry.
  • Lastly, aid with fighting off sickness.

When I don’t get a good nights rest I definitely feel it in all aspects of my life. I’m cranky like the person in a Snicker’s commercial, experiencing terrible mom-brain, and always hungry.

How to Fall Asleep at Night with These Simple Tips

If you’re like me and having a tough time sleeping, take a look at these useful and natural ways of falling asleep.

Read a Book

I’ve recently started reading Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander due to falling in love with the STARZ series. At first I bought the book because all of the raving reviews about it. I didn’t realize that it would help me during my restless evenings.

I’m more of a romance reader, anything from Nora Roberts and Nicholas Sparks. Don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be anything romantic to fall asleep, read something you enjoy!

After a chapter or two I am out cold.

Use a White Noise Machine

Remember the white noise machines you used for your little ones? The same can be used for adults! White noise machines can help drown out the background noise while you’re trying to fall asleep.

I hear everything and loved using the white noise machine, it drowned out the annoying water softener and AC. We used the same when the boys were little and woke easily, and they have many different sounds for you to fall asleep to.

You should definitely look into it.

Diffuse Essential Oils

I absolutely love diffusing lavender and frankincense together in a diffuser. Both lavender and frankincense help to alleviate your stress and anxiety levels. Definitely the perfect pair to have in your sleep arsenal!

Other people recommend using rose, cedarwood, basil, and more. Find your favorite and diffuse those bad boys! There are many amazing essential oils sleep blend you can try. Don’t like lavender? Or Frankincense? Make your own with:

Drink Tea

Drinking a good warm cup of tea can definitely help you relax at night, I especially love the Sleepy Time Tea blend. They have a yummy chamomile tea that helps me relax before bed. There are many great benefits to drinking tea before bed:

  • Relaxes your muscles
  • Reduces stress
  • Great for your digestive tract
  • Can help reduce PMS symptoms
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Eliminates skin puffiness and redness
  • Reduces anxiety

What do you have to lose? So many great benefits of drinking tea! There are decaffeinated tea options if you’re sensitive to caffeine.

Find the Right Mattress

Having the appropriate mattress is definitely a must for some people. For example my husband can’t have a bed that is too hard or too soft, it hurts his back. If his back is constantly hurting how will he get the sleep he needs?

I absolutely love our new mattress, it’s not a Tempur-Pedic but it definitely comes close. We bought a Sealy’s Memory Foam bed from Ashley’s Furniture and have no regrets.

Slip on a Sleep Mask

My husband loves to fall asleep with the TV on, it helps him fall asleep. Not me, I can’t have the TV on or the volume on. The brightness and the background of the TV keeps me up.

If there’s no way for you to sleep in a dark or quiet room, slip on a sleep mask and a pair of ear plugs. You can use the ear plugs if you’re significant other snores – both of us snore and we are frequently kicking each other.

My Final Thoughts

I know life can be overwhelming and stressful with your everyday demands. Your everyday demands can creep into your subconscious and cause you to have difficulties falling asleep. Background noises, light, extra caffeine, and many other factors can also prevent you from falling asleep.

I hope that these useful and natural tips will help you find your next restful night.
